Poorest Indian States by GDP Per Capita

1. Bihar

 Bihar has consistently been one of the poorest states in India. It faces challenges such as a high population density, low literacy rate, inadequate infrastructure, poor governance and limited industrial development. Bihar’s GDP per capita is just INR 46,000. 

2. Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, is also the second-poorest in terms of GDP per capita. It faces challenges such as low literacy rates, inadequate healthcare, and limited industrial growth with a GDP per capita of INR 65,000. The state also struggles with high population density, poverty, and unemployment. 

3. Jharkhand

 Jharkhand is rich in mineral resources but faces issues related to its industrial growth. The state has struggled with governance issues, displacement of tribal communities, and poor infrastructure. Despite its mineral wealth, Jharkhand’s GDP per capita is a mere INR 75,000. 

4. Meghalaya

 Meghalaya faces economic challenges due to its hilly terrain, limited industrial development, and dependence on agriculture and tourism. The state has a significant tribal population and struggles with poverty, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure. Its GDP per capita is INR 82,000. 

5. Manipur

 Manipur’s GDP per capita is INR 84,000. It faces economic challenges due to its hilly terrain, limited connectivity, and socio-political issues. 

6. Assam

 Assam faces challenges related to underdeveloped infrastructure, limited industrial growth, and socio-political issues. The state has a high population density and a large number of marginalised communities, besides heavy immigration. Assam’s GDP per capita is INR 86,000.   

7. Madhya Pradesh

 Madhya Pradesh faces economic challenges due to its large rural population and low industrial development. Its GDP per capita is INR 98,000. 

8. Jammu and Kashmir

 The GDP per capita of J&K is INR 104,000, and it is the eighth-poorest state in India. The poverty rate in the state is above 10 per cent. Jammu and Kashmir’s economy is predominantly dependent on agriculture and allied activities.
